Noise controlled spiral growth in excitable media.

چکیده
We consider a two-dimensional pulse-coupled array of noisy threshold elements with a long-range interaction. For tight coupling, we observe the formation of spatio-temporal excitation waves, such as target and spiral waves. For weak coupling, we find noise sustained spiral growth, where the noise level controls the scale of the spiral. (c) 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Controlled movement and suppression of spiral waves in excitable media
Here we propose mechanisms for controlling the movement and suppression of spiral waves in discrete excitable media. We show that the controlled drift and subsequent annihilation of a spiral wave can be achieved through the combination of two factors: the introduction of small spatial inhomogeneities in the medium and the interaction of the wave with the boundaries of the medium. The inhomogene...
متن کاملSpiral wave breakup in excitable media with an inhomogeneity of conduction anisotropy
Many conditions remodel the heart muscle such that it results in a perturbation of cells coupling. The effect of this perturbation on the stability of the spiral waves of electrochemical activity is not clear. We used the FitzHugh-Nagumo model of an excitable medium to model the conduction of the activation waves in a two-dimensional system with inhomogeneous anisotropy level. Inhomogeneity of ...
متن کاملControlling turbulence in excitable media by applying boundary periodic pacing and gradient force
– Spiral wave and turbulence control in excitable media by applying periodic pacing on system’s boundary is investigated. It is found that spiral waves can be always successfully controlled by boundary periodic forcing with suitable forcing amplitude and frequency. Turbulence caused by spiral-wave breakup is uncontrollable by the boundary pacing, whatever the forcing amplitude and frequency, if...
متن کاملControl of Spatiotemporal Turbulence in Oscillatory and Excitable Media
Spatiotemporal turbulence or defect-mediated turbulence exists quite generally in excitable and oscillatory media such as chemical turbulence in reaction-diffusion systems and electrical turbulence in cardiac muscle. In many situations spatiotemporal turbulence is very undesirable. For example, ventricular fibrillation, the major reason behind sudden cardiac death, is a turbulent cardiac electr...
متن کاملCore solutions of rigidly rotating spiral waves in highly excitable media.
Analytical spiral wave solutions for reaction-diffusion equations play an important role in studying spiral wave dynamics. In this paper, we focus on such analytical solutions in the case of highly excitable media. We present numerical evidence that, for rigidly rotating spiral waves in highly excitable media, the species values in the spiral core region do harmonic oscillations but not relaxat...
